Doing More

Make a difference in the life of a child.

Supporting Charities for Children

As passionate as Elaine Wilson is about food, she is equally passionate about the rights and needs of children, locally and around the world. Elaine is committed to assisting non-profit groups providing aid to children in crisis. This is done personally, directly and through gift certificates used for charity auctions.

Some of the organizations who have benefited are:

SOS Children's Villages Canada
Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation (Snowflake Gala)
Edmonton Youth Emergency Shelter
Edmonton City Centre Hot Lunch Program
Kids Help Phone
Red Cross - Central/Northern Alberta
The United Way (various corporate drives in the Edmonton area)
Hope Mission
Hands Across Africa

Simple Ways to Make a Difference

There are simple ways to make a difference in our own community, without it costing much time, effort or money.

  • Instead of recycling bottles and cans, leave them in in an alley or beside a dumpster for someone who may need the coins for food.

  • Every visit to the grocery store, buy one item and put it in the Food Bank hamper. Canned beans, juice, and pasta are inexpensive and always needed.

  • Save-On Foods offer a $2.00 point-of-purchase donation to the Food Bank that you can add to your grocery bill each time you shop - an easy and direct way to help.

  • The Hunger Site - visit and click everyday to donate food (and more). It's free!

  • Donate your reward points to charities of your choice via HBC Rewards, Shoppers Drug Mart Optimum Program and Canadian Tire Money.

  • When cleaning out your kitchen cupboards and freezer - or making a lifestyle change in the way your eat - instead of throwing away the food, if it isn't spoiled or expired, donate it to your local Food Bank or a shelter like The Youth Emergency Shelter, Hope Mission, The Marian Centre, The Bissel Centre, The Mustard Seed Church, or another organization that would gladly accept your donation.

  • Had a party or function and there's food leftover? Consider taking it to The Youth Emergency Shelter - they're open 24 hours a day and will gladly take your leftovers. The Marian Centre will also take leftovers, and they're open during the day - call for details.
